Our story
Profitable Mushrooms started with a frustration. Mushroom content taught growing and stopped. Business content threw around "$100K from your basement" with no math behind it. Nobody was doing the unglamorous work: pricing tables, cost line items, licensing research, and the contamination losses that quietly kill farm budgets.
So we built the resource we wanted to read — a money-first authority for the US gourmet mushroom micro-farm. Every number on this site is dated and sourced: USDA NASS data for the macro picture (the August 2025 report showed $95.0M in 2024–25 US specialty mushroom sales at an average grower price of $5.83/lb), 2026 wholesale ranges for the pricing tables, and real cost line items for the P&L.
The mission
One reader, one promise: if you want to sell gourmet mushrooms for real money, we will be straight with you about what that takes. That means:
- Real numbers, dated and sourced. Markets move — the USDA specialty numbers swung from $95M down to $75M in a single year. We cite our data with dates so you can trust the freshness.
- Honest about failures. Contamination kills batches. Prices shift. Some varieties are harder to sell than to grow. We publish the ugly parts because your budget depends on them.
- The money side only. We don't teach growing technique. Great resources already do. We own what happens after harvest: pricing, wholesale, licensing, P&L.
Explicitly gourmet — a brand-safety note
We cover culinary species only: oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, and king trumpet. That's a deliberate business decision and a trust decision. Chefs buy gourmet mushrooms; that's the market we're an authority on. You won't find grow-kit content, wild-foraging advice, or anything adjacent to the psychedelic corner on this site — ever.
